What Affordable Homes Mean to Our Communities

To be sure, affordable housing means more people have a stable, quality home. It also benefits everyone in every community because:

  • It creates economic growth through new home (and apartment community) construction programs.

  • Better housing means more workers, because businesses go where the workforce goes. That means even more housing of all kinds (and more economic development).

  • More housing means more consumers in the neighborhood and that increases foot traffic to stores, shops, restaurants and other businesses.

  • Children from all backgrounds have a chance to live in a stable home, which means they can learn more in school (since they're not moving all the time).

  • Low-income women (think single moms) spend less on housing and more on daycare, which means they can focus on education or additional job training. So they can become higher-income women.

  • It provides quality housing for lower-wage earners (remember the equation!)

  • Victims of domestic violence are less likely to return to abusive partners because they can find an affordable home.

And that's not all:

  • It reduces public expenditures for emergency housing or institutional settings by providing stable living situations for people who are homeless and those with special needs.
